Process

Designs develop from sketches and photographs that I have taken while out on walks. These are then drawn out on paper, interpreted into abstract woven patterns inpart on a computer weave program (and as ideas in my head) which are then woven by hand on a Swedish Glimakra floor loom. My computer is not connected to the loom. Recently I have been experimenting with different hand weave techniques to create the more flowing shapes of mountains, lochs and rivers.
I source sustainable yarns spun from natural fibres, becoming ever more aware of the social and environmental implications of yarn production. It is an ongoing challenge to research where yarns come from, who has made them and how far they have travelled to reach me.
The finished textile is hung from a wooden pole or batten at the top of the artwork.
